BELMONT CHILDCARE ASSOCIATION
The
Belmont Child Care Association (BCCA) is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated
to raising financial resources necessary to maintain a quality Child Care Center
(Anna House) for the benefit of working families at New York thoroughbred
racetracks, ninety percent of whom are Mexican. The BCCA also determines the
admissions criteria for the children using Anna House, serves as an Advisory
Board to its child care service provider, and acts as a liaison between the
Center and race track management and other services.
Located at Belmont Park, Anna House is
for children between the ages of six weeks and five years of age, and opened its
doors the beginning of January 2003. Both front side and backstretch employees
at Belmont and Aqueduct Racetracks are able to use the center. The hours of
operation are 5 AM to 1PM, seven days a week, to accommodate the racetrack
employees and their work schedule. The BCCA depends on donations and grants to
keep Anna House operating. To learn how you can help give the children the head

HUDSON RIVER HEALTHCARE
Hudson River HealthCare’s health
promoters traveled to Puebla, Mexico to participate in a week-long health
promotion training program developed in collaboration with the State of Puebla
Secretary of Health Services, the Puebla Migrant Affairs Commission, and the
Secretary of Social Development’s Agricultural Migrant Program.
Dr. Carmen Moran Vera of the Puebla
Secretary of Health, in collaboration with Hudson River HealthCare staff,
organized an intense, interactive training which included workshops on health
promotion strategies on immunizations, women’s health, prenatal care, HIV/AIDS,
TB, and diabetes. The Health Promoters were impressed by the emphasis placed on
and by the interdisciplinary team approach to promotion and education.
Of great interest to the participants
was a visit to Coxcatlan where the Secretary of Health’s modern medicine health
center supervises a traditional/alternative medicine health center next door.
Some of the traditional medicine services that are offered include curanderos
(folk healers), limpias (spiritual cleansings), temescal (ancient ritual steam
bath), parteras (traditional midwives), and a laboratory that supervises the
processing of medicinal herbs to be distributed by the in-house pharmacy. This
integrated approach provides an opportunity to increase awareness and access to
healthcare services, allowing the Secretary of Health’s personnel to build upon
the trust and relationships developed over generations between the community and
traditional medicine practitioners.
Hudson River has developed collaborative
binational relationships with State Health Secretariats, Migrant Affairs Offices
and other organizations in the Mexican States of Puebla and Oaxaca to improve
access, continuity and quality of healthcare services for migrant and immigrant
populations by building upon the knowledge of the health care systems in Mexico
and the United States.
The health promoter training program was
developed to:
Increase knowledge of the health care
systems in Mexico; increase understanding of the migrant population’s health
priorities; increase awareness of the challenges faced by migrants that impact
health; increase familiarity of health-related beliefs, traditions and cultural
values; provide an opportunity for the exchange of experiences, program
strategies, and educational materials; and provide an opportunity to learn from
models that work in outreach and promotion
An invitation has been extended to the
Mexican Government in Puebla to learn about the US Health System in October
during Bi-National Health Week-2007.
