On Monday May 5th the USMCOC-NE organized its
traditional Cinco de Mayo Luncheon at the 3 West
Club in Midtown Manhattan. We were pleased to have
Ambassador Ruben Beltran, Consul General of Mexico
in New York, Ambassador Claude Heller, Permanent
Representative of Mexico to the U.N., as well as
Lorraine Cortez, Secretary of the State of New York
and Terry D. Jackson, Managing Director of the
Division of International Business at the Office of
the Mayor. It was great to see many familiar faces
that have found in the Chamber not only a great
platform for business development, but also for
networking and friendship relations. We were also
happy to have several new people in our celebration.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Chamber held
its Annual Mexico’s Real Estate Investment Forum at
the Waldorf Astoria. The event included four
specialized panels that covered topics such as the
investment climate, real estate performance and
forecast by asset type, public registries and title
insurance in Mexico, real estate appraisal and
valuation, current status and future of Mexican
REITS, and Mexico’s mortgage and other debt
structured products in housing and commercial real
estate. The expert speakers, which included Mexican
government officials, the Mexican Stock Exchange,
lawyers, and high level executives from private
equity funds, REITS, title insurance companies,
rating agencies and financial institutions,
presented and exchanged information and ideas on
Mexico’s real estate market which resulted in very
enriching panel sessions. This conference was indeed
a great opportunity to hear from the experts their
perspective of Mexico’s real estate market in times
of a US economic slowdown.
This year, the Annual Conference organized by the
Binational Office of the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of
Commerce in Washington, D.C., commemorated the 35th
Anniversary of the Chamber and 15th Anniversary of
NAFTA. As part of the Conference, the Chamber hosted
a roundtable on NAFTA with the participation of
Carlos Salinas de Gortari, former President of
Mexico, Thomas “Mac” McLarty, former White House
Chief of Staff, John K. Veroneau, Deputy U.S. Trade
Representative, Herminio Blanco, former Mexico’s
Secretary of Commerce, Guy Saint-Jacques, Minister
and Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Canada
to the U.S. and Amb. Arturo Sarukhan, Ambassador of
Mexico to the U.S. The discussion of this roundtable
was centered on the achievements and benefits of
NAFTA, but also on the challenges ahead.
During the month of June the Chamber hosted a
roundtable discussion with Ambassador Claude Heller,
Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United
Nations. Ambassador Heller conducted an informal
discussion about the role that Mexico plays at the
United Nations, how the country has addressed some
of the main issues of the global agenda, as well as
the most pressing challenges of the organization.
Most of the attendees were young Mexican
professionals that actively engaged in the
discussion with Ambassador Heller and asked for his
perspective on various topics concerning Mexico’s
participation in the United Nations.
