Dear Members,
Mexico’s Presidential Election will take place
almost 100 days from now. Presidential candidates
and their teams are intensifying their campaigns,
trying to cover every single state, city and town in
Mexico and delivering their messages to all Mexicans
through political meetings, speeches, as well as
media ads and press coverage. We expect the most
contested Presidential race in Mexico’s modern
history. Trailing polls show a very close
competition among the three main candidates running
for President. The organization and transparency of
the elections is been guaranteed by the Mexican
Federal Institute, one of the most recognized and
respected independent and autonomous institutions in
Mexico
The scenario appears to be set for a great
celebration of Mexico’s modern democracy. However,
this triumph of democracy is been obscured by a
limited Presidential race in terms of substance and
content. Indeed, we hear generalized voices
lamenting the lack of profound and well-supported
proposals to succeed on solving and managing the
problems and necessities of Mexico and its many
challenges. It is very sad for me to accept that,
presently I do not see true expressions of
leadership and a clear vision for the future of
Mexico in any of the candidates’ campaigns.
Fundamental topics, such as education and structural
reforms, just to mention a few, are barely and
superficially addressed and no concrete actions and
tangible integral solutions have been discussed.
We, as Mexicans committed and concerned about the
future of our country, and all of Mexico’s friends
north of our border, have the responsibility to
promote and demand more substance from the
candidates’ campaigns. We would like to see more
intensive participation from Mexican ideologists and
non-partisan opinion leaders of the political,
social, economic and business sectors. We all have
to contribute to fostering a Presidential race with
more content and substance. In our daily business
and non-business activities, we have to speak out,
discuss and elevate our claims and proposals to our
representatives and candidates. We should not assume
a passive attitude towards the future of Mexico.
The U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, in an effort to
contributing to these objectives, will continue with
its Presidential Election series during the
following months. We are inviting representatives
from the different parties contending for the
Presidency of Mexico, as well as for seats at the
Mexican Congress. Likewise, we are organizing
several panels with specialists in order to discuss
and analyze the different proposals and scenarios
during and after the election process. We invite you
to continue with your enthusiastic and proactive
participation in these important events.
I am sure that in assuming a more active and
committed role, we will be fostering a better future
for our country and hence our North American
community. I invite you to join our efforts.
Sincerely yours,
Eduardo Ramos-Gomez
President
