The U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, Northeast
Chapter, initiated the 2004-2005 winter program with
the presence of Fernando Canales Clariond, Mexico’s
Minister of Economy, who participated in a
conference with members of the Northeast Chapter and
business leaders, to discuss Mexico’s
competitiveness strategy and its new vision towards
China, as well as to analyze and discuss the future
of NAFTA as a key element to face the challenges of
economic competition in the 21st century.
On the onset of this year, the Northeast Chapter was
honored with the presence of Francisco Gil Diaz,
Minister of Finance and Public Credit of Mexico, who
visit to New York to discuss Mexico’s economic
results of 2004 and the outlook, risk and challenges
for 2005. Later this year, these important issues
were further addressed in a private roundtable for
regional and bi-national members with Alejandro
Werner, Director of Economic Policy of the same
Ministry.
In February 2005, the Northeast Chapter hosted a
conference about Mexico’s Financial Sector. Mario
Budebo, President of the Mexico’s National
Commission for the Retirement Saving Systems,
discussed the evolution of the Pension System in
Mexico and the recent changes to the investment
regime that governs the pension funds, which now
allow them to invest in equity and foreign
securities. Guillermo Prieto, President of the
Mexican Stock Exchange also participated with a
presentation on the strategic positioning of the
Mexican securities market within the megatrends in
the international securities industry. Some of the
topics of more relevance for the audience were the
challenges on corporate governance for Mexican
securities issuers and the advances in the
development of the securitization market in Mexico.
Federico Patiño, Deputy Director General of National
Financiera, was also a key speaker at the Mexico’s
Financial Sector Conference. He discussed the role
of Nacional Financiera as an active participant and
promoter on those areas of the Mexican financial
sector where the private sector is not fully
participating, such as the development of the
private equity market and the financial support to
supplier chain participants.
At the beginning of March, we invited Thomas F.
“Mack McLarty, President of Kissinger McLarty
Associates and former President Clinton’s White
House Chief of Staff, to a conference in which he
discussed the current immigration policy of the U.S.
government towards Mexico.
Besides the conferences and seminars directly
related to fostering and strengthening the business
relationships between the United States and Mexico,
the Northeast Chapter had an active role in cultural
initiatives and events. As part of our recent
calendar of events, we co-sponsored a cocktail
reception and guided visit to a Latin American Art
exhibition at Sothebys, and we held our Holiday
Season Reception at Ramis Barquet Gallery.
The United States-Mexico Chamber of Commerce
Northeast Chapter, with the always enthusiastic and
committed participation of its management committee
and its members, is currently working on the
organization of several conferences and seminars for
our 2005 spring and summer calendar of events. We
invite you to keep updated about them in our website
