Day of the Dead – Dia de los Muertos, October 29th – 31st 2010 Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders / Cultura Mexicana Sin Fronteras

Día de Muertos

Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders invites you to our eighth annual celebration of the Day of the Dead (Día de los muertos). A variety of events and workshops will be offered in the churchyard of St. Mark’s in-the-Bowery (10th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan) on Friday, October 29th (5-7:30 pm), Saturday,October 30th (12-7:30pm) and Sunday October 31st (12-8:00pm). All events are free and open to the public.

Day of the Dead has been one of Mexico’s most important festivals since pre-Hispanic times.  It is a time for families to gather and welcome the souls of the dead on their annual visit home.  Cempasúchil (marigold) flowers, burning copal incense, fresh pan de muerto bread, candles, sugar skulls, photographs and mementos of the departed adorn special altars.  In Mexico, Day of the Dead is celebrated over an entire week with the preparation of altars, foods, dance, music and special offerings for people who have died.  Mano a Mano recreates the magical space of a village churchyard during the celebration and has organized a series of events including altar building, workshops, dance, poetry and music.

This year, in observance of the bicentennial of Mexico’s Independence and the centennial of its Revolution, valiant figures from Mexico’s past will be honored. In additional, local artists will be invited to create three small altars on the themes of: Women of Juárez, Victims of Drug Trafficking, and Children Who Have Died. A weekend Mexican Market will provide visitors with a chance to buy authentic products for their altars.

Program Highlights include:
• Noche Mexicana on Friday, October 29th with food music and dance
• Visitors of all ages can attend workshops where they will learn traditional Mexican paper crafts, sugar skull making, bread making and poetry writing on Saturday, October 30th and Sunday, October 31st 2010
• Concert by Radio Jarocho, a spirited music and dance ensemble in the Afro-Mexican tradition; Saturday, October 30th
• A procession with traditional Mexican dancers through the Village streets on October 30th, 2010
• The celebration concludes on Sunday, October 31st with a stunning performance by Mariachi Tapatio de Alvaro Paulino. During this time, the public is invited to come share the bread and flowers and join in the clearing away of the altar

Make The Holidays A Little Brighter For The Racetrack Families
The Belmont Child Care Association

Since 2002 The Belmont Child Care Association (BCCA) has held a Holiday Shopping Bazaar at Anna House for the children of the backstretch workers and other neighborhood children.  This year the event is being held on

December 11th.  On that date hundreds of children will “shop” for gifts for their parents and siblings.  Gifts that we have bought, or were donated to The BCCA.  This is the ninth year of having this Holiday Bazaar at Anna House at Belmont Race Track, and we expect over 500 children this year.  Along with a BCCA Board Member, or a volunteer, a child goes through our “department store” and selects gifts.  The gifts are wrapped and tagged, and the child leaves knowing that they will be able to put some gifts under their tree for their parents and siblings.

We do not budget for this bazaar and we depend on the generosity of our donors to make the holiday a happy one for the families who work on the backstretch.  As we are in the midst of an economic downturn, the prospects for us to receive as much in donations are not good. We are seeking gifts of toys or clothing for our families, or monetary gifts that we will use to shop for gifts.

Send your gifts or donations to:
Belmont Child Care Association, 2150 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont, NY 11003

We accept American Express, VISA and MasterCard’s.
