Hosted at NASDAQ MarketSite in New York City
On Friday July 31st, the United States – Mexico Chamber of Commerce Northeast Chapter joined efforts with the Consulate General of Mexico in New York, NASDAQ OMX, the Mexico Tourism Board, ProMexico and the Cultural Institute of Mexico in New York, to organize the conference “Mexico Today”. Hosted at NASDAQ MarketSite in New York City, the conference was a day of activities recognizing Mexico's position as a global business partner and as a rewarding investment destination. Alejandro Ramos, Executive Director of the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce Northeast Chapter, Edward S. Knight, Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Chief Regulatory Officer of The NASDAQ OMX Group and Amb. Ruben Beltran, Consul General of Mexico in New York, welcomed more than 100 attendees and opened the conference. The first speaker, Mexico's Undersecretary of Finance, Dr. Alejandro Werner, discussed the current economic situation in Mexico and the role that new actions and policies set in place by the Government of Mexico have had in helping the country to endure the international economic crisis.
Following Dr. Werner’s presentation, Alonso Garcia Tames, Director General of Banobras, Mexico’s Development Bank for Infrastructure, elaborated on current plans to increase the funding of infrastructure projects and on the new financial facilities and structures to promote the participation of the private sector in infrastructure projects in Mexico.
The next session was delivered by José Antonio Torre, Head of Business Intelligence of ProMexico, Mexico's Government Agency for Trade & Investments. Mr. Torre commented on the strengths of the Mexican Economy, including its global integration and ample export base. Mr. Torre also discussed the advantages for American companies investing in Mexico. The tourism sector was also addressed as part of the conference. Patrick K. Sullivan, President of the Society of Incentive & Travel Executive (Site) International participated as speaker in this conference providing a positive perspective about the evolution and trends, as well as the benefits that Mexico offers as destination for corporate events and leisure.
To close the morning activities, Ambassador Rubén Beltran delivered a message highlighting the strength with which Mexico has successfully endured the recent financial turmoil.
Later in the afternoon, Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan, Ambassador of Mexico to the United States, together with the Consul General of Mexico in New York, the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations, the Executive Director of the U.S. Mexico Chamber of Commerce Northeast Chapter, as well as representatives of ProMexico, the Mexico's Tourism Board and the Mexican Cultural Institute in New York presided over The NASDAQ Stock Market Closing Bell. During the ceremony, the logos of the organizers of “Mexico Today” conference, including the one of the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce were displayed in the NASDAQ MarketSite Tower in Times Square.
